Ladies 0711-Homestead Dress:
Expecting, Camp and Work
This dress is thought of as being a Civil War dress yet it goes
from pre Civil War up near the 1870's as people moved more to the west. This
is a very loose fitting dress for travel west by wagon etc.
NOTE: This dress is very full, it is NOT for women that
are concerned about a small waist look. It is great for those that do not like a confining dress or are
pregnant. By adding a half apron you can give the waist of this dress a more defined appearance.
This is a camp dress. It's great to wear around
camp for cooking,
cleaning and chasing children around. It can be made to be plain /simply, yet we do like to add a little trim
for contrast and appearance. Still it's nice to even look good, even in camp. Also very good for those that do
the out back/ country re-enacting and you don't want to wear a hoop or take a chance on your nice day dresses.
Although you can add a hoop and dress it up for evening wear.
This is gathered at waist or straight cut, drop
sleeves and a large (tall) ruffle at bottom. Buttons down
front. Can be with straight cut sleeves with piping at wrist for pre war, or
full sleeves with cuff band.
Optional; With wrist ruffle, straight sleeve,
or full with cuff band. Round Peter Pan collar or piped
around neckline. Matching tie for waist, are partial waist band added to tie
in back.
Suggest:
An apron, a under hoop slip. The long padded bonnet, that is pictured below,
is great when out in the sun.
We DO NOT make identical dresses. DO NOT ask for a dress
"just like" one that we
have already made. Something must be changed: color, trim, fabric design
or dress
pattern. Also many of the fabrics shown are no longer available. That is
why we don't
list specific fabric choices.

Purchase the pattern for the Homestead Dress
1860s-1870s Homestead Dress by Past Patterns #711
We dated this dress to the 1860s because of the fashionably long shoulder line. The princess
style, however, is more typical of the 1870s. The 711 is a very comfortable gown and the unaproned waist is
suitable for ladies in confinement.
This pattern is multi-sized 10 through 20. Sizes 10-14 require 6-1/8 Yds. of 45 inch wide
fabric; sizes 16-20 require 7 Yds. of 45 inch wide fabric.
This is a Civil War dress, yet it is pre Civil War
(Late 1850s to 1860s) and goes
up into the 1870's as more women moved west
Of the two camp/ work dresses, this one is more dressy.
This is made with a waist band. Great for those that work around
the camp site cooking and/ or chasing children. Also good for those back woods camping re-enacting, where as
you don't want to wear your hoop are damage or dirty your fine day dresses. Yet, if you want you can add a hoop
and can be ready for evening.
It's made off the shoulder with piping at the edge and followed further down, piping
again. the bodice is lined and boned. Comes with matching or contrast piping on sleeve. Above the breast it's gathered
yoke to give full comfort.
Optional; are a piped (collarless) neckline or round peter pan collar. With full
sleeves or cuffs. I recommend cuffs for real wear, due to the fact, that full sleeves tend to get into things,
like cooking, fire, etc. Also optional, is with the top being of a solid color and the bottom a print.
Note: put in comment field if your plan on wearing a hoop and the
size, for correct sizing of bottom of skirt.
Matching
or Contrasting Material Top & Skirt: Both Top and Skirt in the same Material,
or contrasting. Suggest: bonnet, that is on the other page of camp dress and
under hoop slip.

Purchase the pattern for the Round Dress
Fashionable Late 1840s to Early 1850s Round Dress
by Past Patterns #803
The lined and lightly boned front-closing bodice is gathered into a drop-shouldered yoke. The
style, with the bodice and skirt attached to the same waistband, is called a 'round dress'. The #702 undersleeve
works well with this style of sleeve.
The original fabric is a printed cotton paisley in red and brown earth tones.
This pattern is multi-sized 10 through 20. All sizes require 5-3/4 Yds. of 45 inch wide fabric.
Here is four different style of day dresses,
not bodice and skirt like most on this web site yet, one piece dresses,
except sample C, that has under sleeves. All bodice/tops are lined and
boned.
The first being the red on the left side
has long style caps at top of a gathered sleeve. Fancy to wear for day and carry
over into tea. A round peter pan collar
with crochet collar that is under the collar to give that extra touch.
(Crochet collar can be ordered separate). The skirt is pleated
and has a waist band to give that look of a skirt and bodice/ blouse.
The second, sample B, below in light green, has a full
crochet collar and even lighter trim, yet it's still ready for tea. The
skirt pleated, yet gathered into the bodice/ blouse to give that full look
of a dress.
The third, sample C, is really a fancy
day and tea dress, as you can see. Lots of lace, ribbon and lace under
sleeves, with white crochet collar.
The fourth, sample D, is closer to pre
and early Civil War time period with the straight sleeves, and piped wrist.
Done simply, for getting around camp and chores easily. With a small round
peter pan collar.
Suggestion: Small cotton print, or
print bottom with solid top/bodice.

This is a 3 piece outfit. A bodice/ blouse, skirt, and under
sleeves. It can be made in cotton for more of a day or formal tea dress. For a 2 piece dress,
see other page.
The Bodice/Top has caps at the shoulder. At the neck you can have
piping (Samples B, C, D and E) or a Peter Pan collar (Sample A). The sleeves come down full, with
under sleeves that hook inside to be able to remove at dusk for those special occasions.
The Skirt can be done to fit any occasion, such as in the drawing
and pictures, which show two different skirts. The standard is a Pleated Skirt (Samples B, C and D).
The optional skirt (Samples A and D) is a 3 Ruffle/Flounce skirt and is available for an additional
cost. CAUTION with the 3 flounce option: this dress SHOULD NOT
be made from heavier drapery material, as the weight of the dress would be
excessive. It can be made from the lighter drapery/home decor fabrics,
although the weight may still exceed the capacity of a normal hoop and
require a steel cage hoop.
Trim and Style (Use): The amount of trim varies with the intended
use and social status of the owner. It can vary from no trim for a simple day dress to fancy trim
for a fancy tea dress. The shopping cart offers: a Plain Day Dress (Sample E), the dress with Bodice
Trim (Sample B) for a little fancier day dress, the dress with Bodice and Skirt Trim (Sample B) for
a fancy day dress or simple tea dress or the 3 Ruffle/Flounce skirt with Trimmed Bodice (Samples A
& D) for a fancy tea dress. For other variations or amounts of trim, please call us or email and
talk about your needs/desires.
Material: Cotton, Taffeta or Drapery. Do not suggest drapery with the 3
flounce skirts, since the weight would be to heavy to be held up properly.
Collar: Piping, Peter Pan, crochet, or crochet necktie.

Ladies 1860s
Pagoda Bodice/ Skirt 2 - #3855: Day or Tea
This material IS NOT available
This is a very nice 4 piece pattern, although we have
had to alter it extensively to be correct for the time period. This is a different Pagoda
bodice/ blouse, skirt, bertha and under sleeves, then our other. It has a
bertha, although this design is not to be worn without the bertha, since the
cut in front is to deep. The bertha and under sleeves were to give the look
of a blouse/ bodice without the extra material, leaving it more comfortable
to move around in.
The top/bodice in the red plaid as you
see, has a nice change in the sleeve design. There's a "V" shape in the
front neck area, with white material giving it a bodice/ blouse underneath
look, whereas it's a bertha, (see below). Then the under sleeves being detachable, for after dusk, tea or
social. Closes down the front to the point. The point design being more
early war years in design.
The skirt, being the third piece, can be
pleated or gathered. A waist band that can button or hook & eye in back.
Trim:
Day - Plain - no ruching / ruffles (Not Shown).
Day/Tea - Sleeve and Sleeve Cap Ruching Trim Only (Not Shown).
Tea - Full Bodice Ruching and Bows, as shown in picture.
Note: Ruching: material making a ruche. Ruche: a strip of pleated lace, net,
muslin or other material for trimming or finishing a dress, as at the collar
or sleeves.

At this time we're only offering the 1858s thru 1860s ball bodice /
blouse and skirt. All bodices are made with lining and boning. Depending on time period the
sleeves and point are adjusted to fit the period. Gathered sleeves, with arm cuffs/band or
gathered drawstring band.. Laces up the back with grommets/ button holes are hook and eyes. Pointed
front with straight cut back. Scooped neck with off the shoulder design.
The picture to your left is a 1858 ball bodice and skirt.
The top has a full gathered and lace trim collar with hand made flower in center. Puff sleeves with
band. With the short point for the 50s style, and buttons in back.
The bottom skirt is with white lace and ribbon. The top/ over
skirt is scooped to meet on each side of waist band with ruffles all around. The material, that
doesn't show up is a seersucker with rainbow colors in pin strips. This dress could easy be carried
over into Civil War do to lack of material, due to the war. Waist band that buttons in back. (See
pictures below).
Another is the bright pink cotton pin strip with cotton eyelet lace trim
across in rows of the front. Contrast pink sleeve caps and arm band, that hook and eyes in back. The
skirt is double, with the top being bright pink polish cotton with waist band that buttons in back.
Ball Bodice
Note: The difference from 1850 thru the 60's is mainly the point.
Further forward in time the more narrow, sharp point you had whereas in the 50's was a shorter more
blunt point. As you can tell in the drawings in A & C.
Optional is epaulets, (which are the small piece that is above the
gather or pleated part of the sleeve), shown in darker pink picture, sleeve style, point size, material
and rather to be a single, or double skirt or with flounces found in our never ending dress. Price will
depend on style, material and how much trim/ fancy you will want. CAUTION
with flounces or double skirt: this dress SHOULD NOT be made from
heavier drapery material, as the weight of the dress would be excessive. It
can be made from the lighter drapery/home decor fabrics, although the weight
may still exceed the capacity of a normal hoop and require a steel cage
hoop.
