Soldiers were issued greatcoats. (NOTE: Many officers used enlisted greatcoats, some with the
detachable cape well before 1884.

Civil War Union Soldiers were issued greatcoats to
be worn over their uniforms during the winter months.
The Foot (Infantry) version (pictured at left) is single
breasted with a standing collar and has an elbow length cape.
The Mounted (Cavalry and Artillery) version is double
breasted with a stand and fall collar and a cuff length cape.
Our standard quality coat is made of quality heavy weight
wool with a heavy cotton drill body lining that extends below the waist. An optional
wool body lining, for the ultimate in warmth, is available at extra cost. Coats have
down turn sleeve cuffs and a split back seam with two piece back belts. Back belts
have two buttonholes and one button for waist adjustment. Raw bottom skirt, as per
original uniforms in Sky Blue Wool.
Chevrons are not included with uniforms, whether pictured or not,
but can be added for an additional charge.

Both Foot
(Infantry) and Mounted (Artillery & Cavalry - pictured) greatcoats are
double breasted with cuff length cape. Cape is NOT lined and is permanently
attached to the body. The coat body has 5/8 length grey wool lining (blanket
lined) and cotton sleeve lining. Collar is the stand and fall collar. Buttons
are supplied but not sewn on.
Made from our quality 20 ounce field service sky
blue wool. The coat is virtually identical to the Mounted Greatcoat from 1858
except the collar is a little shorter in height and a gray wool flannel body
lining has been added. Raw bottom skirt, as per originals in Sky Blue Wool.
Chevrons are not included, whether pictured or not,
but can be added for an additional charge.

Color of the Greatcoat remains Sky Blue and the lining remains Dark Blue Body Lining
with cotton sleeve lining.
This coat has a Double Cape and both
are unlined.

This coat is similar to the model of 1872, except the stand and fall
collar has again been shortened in height slightly and the fit of the coat a little tighter. Made from our
quality heavy weight (20 ounce field service) Civil War sky blue wool, with dark blue wool body lining (to
just below the waist) with two inside pockets and cotton sleeve linings. Both Foot (Infantry) and Mounted
(Artillery & Cavalry) greatcoats are double breasted with cuff length cape.
The cape has the colored wool lining denoting branch of service, but is not detachable.
Buttons are supplied but not sewn on. Raw bottom skirt, as per originals in Sky Blue Wool.
Chevrons are not included, whether pictured or
not, but can be added for an additional charge.

In 1885 in an effort to get less color variation from dye lot to dye lot in the lighter blue wool used for trousers and greatcoats, the
Army changed the “old standard” sky blue wool (still left over from the Civil War era) to a new darker shade- closer to a Royal Blue.
This greatcoat is made from our quality heavy weight Medium Blue wool, with a detachable cape and colored cape lining to denote branch of
service. The coat has a dark blue wool body lining to the waist, cotton sleeve linings and two inside pockets. The “new style” 1883 buttons are supplied but not sewn on. Both Foot (Infantry) and Mounted
(Artillery & Cavalry) greatcoats are double breasted with cuff length cape.
